"Autumn -

beautiful colours

to brighten

our days"
'A warming breakfast of Spiced Quinoa and my favourite ginger tea'
Picture
As the mornings grow colder, we are naturally drawn towards more warming foods. Here is a simple, warming breakfast that is light, delicious and full of nutrition to kick start your day - it's also super quick and easy to make...
Spiced Quinoa Breakfast
Ingredients:
2/3 cup of Quinoa flakes
1 1/2 cups of water
1/2 tspn ground cinnamon

1 tspn of ground ginger
1/8 tspn ground cardamom or 1 pod crushed
pinch of rock salt
Topping:
1 dessert spoon of mixed pumpkin seeds, sunflower kernals and chopped walnut pieces
1 dessert spoon of raw honey or Maple syrup

Method:
Rinse the quinoa flakes in a sieve
Place quinoa in a small saucepan with 1 cup of the water, over medium heat. Stir with a wooden spoon
Add the spices and rock salt
Simmer for about 3 minutes, adding more water if needed
Serve sprinkled with the mixed seeds and walnuts. Drizzle with raw honey or Maple syrup.
Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is a seed that is high in protein, gluten free and warming in nature. It is easily digested by all three dosha's.
*Vata - this warming, lightly spiced breakfast is wonderful for Vata dosha
*Kapha - can add toasted slivered almonds instead of walnuts as they are less oily/heavy

*Pitta - ginger and cinnamon are warming - you may like to reduce the amount if you feel they are     too heating for you.
*Use organic ingredients where possible
My favourite Ginger Tea - with turmeric and raw honey
This golden ginger tea will warm you up from the inside out and provide you with all the health benefits of turmeric, ginger and honey, helping to keep your digestive fire a-glow!
Picture
Ingredients:
Makes enough for one small teapot or 2 generous cups
2 teaspoons of fresh ginger or 1 tspn of dry ginger
1 teaspoon of freshly grated turmeric or 1/2 tspn of dried turmeric
1 teaspoon of raw honey
Grate the fresh ginger and turmeric. Place in a tea strainer or teapot and steep in boiled water for 5 minutes. If using dried turmeric and ginger, add this to the tea strainer and steep. Pour the tea into a cup and add a dash of raw honey to taste.
*Most beneficial for Vata and Kapha dosha due to the heating qualities of the ingredients. Pitta can reduce the amount of ginger or replace with a teaspoon of dried fennel seeds.

Both the Spiced Quinoa breakfast and the ginger turmeric tea help to kindle the digestive fire (Agni) which supports metabolism and boosts the immune system.
*Most beneficial to Vata and Kapha dosha.
*This can be too heating for Pitta dosha to have together. Try Fennel tea with turmeric instead.

Hello Liesl, I would like to thank you for suggesting I take Turmeric & Ginger tea to which I added honey, crushed garlic and lemon juice when I had a cold a few weeks ago. I had 4-6 cups a day and I am sure that it reduced the symptoms dramatically.

So happy to hear this worked for you Jacqui. Your addition of garlic and lemon juice would have provided even more immune boosting benefits to chase your cold away!

Shall definitely try the quinoa this week Liesl. What a lovely alternative to porridge and so healthy too. Thankyou for sharing all you know with all of us.

My pleasure Tanya. Yes, it is a good alternative to porridge and lighter to digest. I'd love to hear your thoughts once you've tried it - keep me posted!
